Radiation Protection for New Reactors

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is dedicated to protecting the public and occupational workers from radiation hazards in the various medical, academic, scientific, and industrial uses of radioactive materials. Toward that end, in addition to Radiation Monitoring at Operating Nuclear Power Plants, the NRC performs thorough technical reviews of radiation protection programs for all new reactor license applications. Areas reviewed by the NRC's Health Physics staff include occupational radiation protection, radioactive waste management, and public radiation safety. In addition, during construction of new reactor facilities, the NRC will inspect radiation protection equipment and design features to ensure that the facilities meet the agency's established safety requirements.
