Change of the NRC Operations Center Commercial Telephone & Facsimile Numbers
UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION OFFICE OF NUCLEAR REACTOR REGULATION & OFFICE OF NUCLEAR MATERIAL SAFETY AND SAFEGUARDS WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555 April 11, 1994 NRC ADMINISTRATIVE LETTER 94-04: CHANGE OF THE NRC OPERATIONS CENTER COMMERCIAL TELEPHONE & FACSIMILE NUMBERS Addressees All NRC licensees. Purpose The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is issuing this Administrative Letter to inform addressees that the NRC Operations Center commercial telephone and facsimile numbers are scheduled to change. This Administrative Letter does not transmit or imply any new requirements or staff positions. No specific action or written response is required. Background The NRC Operations Center is scheduled to move from Bethesda, Maryland, to Two White Flint North in Rockville, Maryland, at noon on May 31, 1994. This move will change the present commercial telephone and facsimile numbers for the NRC Operations Center. Consequently, the telephone numbers currently published in the Code of Federal Regulations (i.e., 10 CFR Sections 21.2, 21.21, 30.50, 35.33, 40.60, 50.55, 50.72, 70.50, 70.52, 72.74, 73.67, and 73.71) will no longer be valid. The facsimile numbers in 10 CFR Sections 21.21 and 50.55 will also be changed. The Code of Federal Regulations is being revised to reflect the new numbers. This revision will become effective May 31, 1994, and requires addressees to update the telephone and facsimile numbers in their procedures and in any other affected documentation between May 31, 1994, and August 29, 1994. During this approximately 90-day period of time, both the old and new numbers will access the NRC Operations Center. After this period, only calls using the new telephone numbers will reach the NRC Operations Center. For holders of operating licenses for nuclear power reactors, the telephone number used for accessing the Emergency Response Data System (ERDS) will change effective on or about March 28, 1994, following the relocation of the ERDS minicomputers to Rockville, Maryland. Both the old and new ERDS access numbers will be effective between March 28, 1994, and September 28, 1994. After September 28, 1994, only the new telephone number will work. Discussion Licensees may wish to change the telephone and facsimile numbers they use near the middle of the period when both the old and new numbers will reach the 9404050171. AL 94-04 April 11, 1994 Page 2 of 2 NRC Operations Center. This action may minimize potential problems (e.g., a delay in the actual NRC Operations Center move and problems with changing automatic telephone dialers). The primary 24-hour telephone number for the NRC Operations Center will change from (301) 951-0550 to (301) 816-5100. The backup numbers will change from (301) 427-4056, 427-4259, 492-8893, 951-6000, and 951-1212 to a single number (301) 951-0550, (which is the previous primary telephone number). The facsimile number will change from (301) 492-8187 to (301) 816-5151. For holders of operating licenses for nuclear power reactors, the telephone number used for accessing ERDS will change from (301) 492-4712 to (301) 816-5160. New telephone stickers will be issued in the near future to replace those on existing phones in the control room, Technical Support Center, and Emergency Operations Facility for nuclear power reactors. This Administrative Letter requires no specific action or written response.
